I think the original song “Girls just want to have fun” was sung by Cindy Lauper. It is very catchy and upbeat, which are qualities captured by this image of girls at a party, who no doubt also just want to have fun. Go girls! And I don’t mean that disparagingly …one of the “girls” is my wife!
Actually, I love this photo. Don’t you just wish you could “jump into it”, and join the fun? Well, guess what, you can! I don’t mean you can literally jump into this photo, but you can have the fun depicted in this photo, in your life.
Richard Branson was once asked what the secret of his success was. His response consisted of one word, “Fun”. I can almost immediately hear some of you respond that if you had the billions he has in in your bank account, you would also have loads of fun. Actually, Richard Branson did not say that he was having fun because he made billions, but rather that he made billions because of his capacity to have fun. What do you think he meant by that? I imagine that Richard Branson was inspired to become a success because he woke up each morning thinking about having fun as he followed his path to success. He did not focus on the end game, but rather on the road to achieving his dream. He had fun each day as he progressed towards the achievement of his milestones, which were stepping stones on his way towards his big goals and dreams. He likely rewarded himself with the achievement of each small goal, task or milestone, which only inspired him to keep going.
Do you have fun each day? Do you live life with the intention of having fun? Intention is key. Fun does not happen by itself. It starts with intent. Purpose. Many years ago I purposely set myself a goal, namely to do something for fun each day. Even if it was just treating myself to a cup of coffee after a good sales call. (I still haven’t made the billions Richard Branson has, but who said you can’t have fun without money?) Having fun is a habit which one has to develop.
Helen Keller said “Eat the dessert first”. I guess she meant that we should not postpone fun, or happiness. Enjoy each day, and each moment, for what it presents to you “in the moment”. When you wake up in the morning, what are your predominant thoughts? Positive or negative? Happy or dejected? Remember, you can choose your thoughts, which create your feelings. Hence, choose to focus on the reasons you have for being happy. Your measure of health, the people who love you, the people you love, your marvelous body, your abilities to perform and achieve goals, your resources to aid you achieve your goals, your amazing brain, and your capacity to learn. This list could be endless. Above all, this list is “the dessert” Helen Keller referred to. Enjoy the good things life “dishes up” for you. You could so easily overlook the very things which empower you to have fun.
Your ability to have fun is also closely linked to your goals and life purpose. In the case of Richard Branson, he had exciting goals which inspired him each day towards the achievement of his goals. People with big, hair raising goals wake up in the morning with excitement as they get out of bed to go “chasing their goals”. I imagine that it would be difficult to be inspired if you don’t have any exciting goals.
What are your goals? Are they aligned with your “life purpose”? (Everybody should have a Personal Mission Statement, which reflects their “life purpose”) Are your goals written down? Clarity is power. Written goals, with deadlines, demonstrates to your sub-conscious mind that you are serious about your goals, enabling your sub-conscious mind to work towards attracting the reality of your goals.
Can you see how having exciting goals contributes to your capacity to have fun each day? Living life with purpose empowers you to do more, to be more, to achieve more, to live more.
So now, take another look at the photo above. Do you see yourself in it? Do you see the possibilities for you to also have fun each and every day? If you do, please, go ahead, jump right into the photo. Join the party! Have fun, loads of it. And don’t forget to share your fun with others, just as the girls in the photo are doing.
